My foray into Telugu literature was initiated and
greatly encouraged by Dr. Prasad Saripalli, an avid
aficionado of the Telugu language, a refined connoisseur of Indian classical
music and a spirited poet himself. The first poem of
his that I performed was the much-beloved "Manrang"
bandish in Ahir Bhairav, alabelaa sajana aayo ri,
for which Dr. Saripalli authored the Telugu lyrics in
such a way so as to preserve the original flavour of
the bandish as well as convey its essence in an
imaginative Telugu context. The song, ala bEla marula svaami raa,
was rendered by me and was published in November 2013 in the popular Telugu web
magazine Eemaata
and the link is here.
o
Following the Hindi-to-Telugu bandish
was another poem, and this time it was a famous Bengali song by Rabindranath Tagore, aguner poroshmoni, that Dr. Saripalli
brilliantly translated to Telugu while maintaining the original songs purport,
style and undercurrent. The song, ogi nee,
was rendered by me and was published in March 2014 in Eemaata and the link is here.
